u10s secure first win of season over Hemel

21 May 2013

WCC U10`s played at Hemel this Friday lead by skipper Alfie, in cold, near twilight conditions looking for their first win of the campaign.

Batting first, Wheathampstead got off to a solid start with Morgan & Alfie ending their pairing on 214/1, the pick of the shots a beautifully timed glance behind square earning Morgan 4 runs.

Next up Luke and Chris steadily clocked up runs, taking advantage of anything on offer, pushing the score up to a respectable 225/2.

Argen and Cian came to the crease next and were faced with the pick of the Hemel bowling attack. They batted intelligently, both playing out a maiden each with admirable concentration managing to add 9 runs to the total.

Joel and Patrick were last in looking to build on the solid platform of 234/3 laid down by their team mates.

It wasn't long before they were amongst the runs with some brutal hitting from Joel which included two fours hammered behind square leg, complimented by Patrick taking well placed singles and happily profiting from generous overthrows. The pair put on a game changing 28 runs for the last partnership- an excellent effort.

WCC 262/3 from their 16 overs.

WCC took to the field in buoyant mood, confident in their ability to defend the hard earned  total. Alfie and Chris opened the bowling, the Hemel batsmen were on the front foot instantly looking to score quickly but were restricted to singles only, the fielders applying good pressure, backing up the bowlers. Level pegging at 214 after 4 overs. Morgan and Argen carried on the excellent work containing well and unlucky not

to get wickets. 223/0 getting interesting at halfway. Luke and Cian shared the third spell, Cian clean bowling a victim in a superb spell backed up by Luke at the other end.

Skipper Alfie was now stirring up the troops for a final push for victory with

Hemel feeling the heat on 230/1 after 12 overs. Patrick, Cian and Alfie shared the final sortie and finished the job in fine style conceding a miserly five runs from four overs with some excellent deliveries.

Hemel finished on 235/1 from their 16 overs.

All credit to the lads, they all worked hard for each other and deserved the win. The team spirit was excellent, helped by Alfie`s exuberant captaincy they never switched off in the field. A special mention to Joel for highest score of 13 and a great stint behind the stumps. Cian with figures of 3 overs 1 wicket 2 runs was the pick of the bowlers but with only 8 extras conceded, all the bowlers did really well.

Big thanks to Andy W for scoring & Andy A for pitch side help.
