A Day to Remember: Wheathampstead Girls at Lord’s

04 May 2025

The Wheathampstead Cricket Club girls team had been counting down the days. Today wasn’t just another Sunday of practice or a match — today, they were stepping into history. They were spending the day at Lord’s, the Home of Cricket.

Under the guidance of their dedicated coach, Eamonn, the girls arrived full of excitement, ready for an unforgettable experience. The famous ground, with its immaculate outfield and towering stands, looked even more impressive in person. For young cricketers with big dreams, it was almost overwhelming.

The morning was spent on the Nursery Ground, where they took part in a training session led by experienced coaches from MCC. The girls threw themselves into it — quite literally in some cases — diving for catches, bowling with extra zip, and refining their batting technique in the nets. The energy was high, but so was the focus. It was clear: they weren’t just here to watch greatness — they were here to grow into it.

Coach Eamonn, watching proudly from the boundary, saw something spark in them. “This,” he said to one of the MCC coaches, “is exactly what they needed.”

After training and a quick bite to eat, the team moved into the iconic ground to watch Middlesex take on Kent in a County Championship match. The atmosphere was calm yet electric — a contrast the girls quickly learned to appreciate. Every shot, every wicket, every cheer from the crowd became a lesson.

Some watched in awe, some took mental notes, and others whispered strategies to each other as if they were already captains in the making. They didn’t just see professionals — they saw possibilities.

By the time stumps were drawn for the day, the Wheathampstead girls were tired, sun-kissed, and inspired. As they left the ground, a few glanced back at the Pavilion, imagining what it might feel like to walk through those doors as players.

Coach Eamonn turned to the group and grinned. “So,” he said, “next stop… England squad?”

The giggles and cheers said it all. Lord’s had done its magic.
