WCC’s good start to their indoor league campaign continued with a convincing win over Chesham. WCC lost the toss and were asked to field. Winchester gathered his troops together into a prematch huddle as news broke of the Westlife split. Some of the team were clearly affected, but Winchester requested they concentrated on the job in hand before mourning their great loss.
A slow start was expected given the shocking and distressing news, and that’s what we had. Indifferent bowling, overthrows and comical Boothy fielding allowed the oppo to gain momentum. With the ball heading straight to the Wheato Superstar, Boothy dropped the ball onto the wall, not once, but twice for two overthrow runs. Classic.
Despite this the opposition only managed to get up to a run rate of 10 an over, and when we got our fielding skills returned, we soon took 3 quick run outs. With Chesham needing to rebuild, we turned the pressure on with some tight bowling from Jilli, Robbo, Nozza and Chris. This led to more desperate running in an attempt to lift the run rate and allowed us to complete 6 run outs! The opposition finished on just 94 when they could have got 120+.
We were left only needing 8 an over as Boothy and Robbins took to the crease. They managed a steady start before they were both bowled in quick succession (yes, Robbo didn’t run himself out!) leaving us on 23 for 2 off 4 overs. Winchester and Martin started slowly, with the idea of leaving wickets in hand for the latter overs. By the time Rich had nurdled 26 retired runs in very composed fasion, Jilli and Chris blasted us to victory with 10 balls to go. Chris smashed an 8 to win the game in style.
The result leaves us with 2 wins and a loss in our league campaign, with Hawbridge Harriers up next.
