Wheato Sunday 1st XI were crowned Champions of the Herts and Beds National Village Cup competition as they took another step closer to Lord's with a superb victory over Langleybury. With the prospect of a place in the National Rounds, Wheato lost the toss and were asked to field, managing to restrict Langleybury to 190 for 6 off their 40 overs. Adam Winchester (3 for 36) and Nick Martin (1 for 32) bowled tightly and the game was in the balance with Wheato now requiring 191 for the win. Openers Richard Winchester (48) and Adam Winchester (62) took to the Bury opening bowlers, dispatching them to the boundary eleven times, including four huge sixes to share a superb 104 run opening stand and put Wheato right in the chase but tight bowling saw them collapse to 163 for 6 and needing seven an over for the last four overs. Once again the lower order batted brilliantly, rotating the strike and hitting the bad ball but it came down to six off the last over. Steve Booth (11*) and Mark Winchester (29*) batted well and needing 2 off 2 balls, Winchester smashed the penultimate ball of the game to the square leg boundary for four to send the Wheato players and travelling fans wild. Their reward is a trip to Middleton CC on the coast of West Sussex on Sunday 30th June as they are now just four games away from  their dream of playing at Lord's.
